What DeKalb's Children Think About the E-book Announcement

Atkinson addressed a room full of suits recently at the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce meeting.  She announced the plans to move to I-pads and E-readers to the delight of the luncheon's gold sponsors like ATT and Georgia Power.  Earlier in the year, at a Tucker Parent Council meeting, Atkinson said that one of her "long-term" goals was:

"The replacement of text books with e-books. Without this,” she said, “our children won’t be able to compete.  Many countries are completely digital.  We’re behind, but we will work to catch up.”

(Can someone please remind her that there is still that nagging little problem of not being able to teach the kids to READ that might get in the way of the progress??)

If you are thinking that Atkinson might be trying to do what is right for the kids by getting rid of the real teachers, para-professionals and even librarians and, instead, handing over our tax dollars to buy a bunch of gadgets that will need to be continuously upgraded, maintained, replaced and supported, then try this:

The next  time you wish to read an annual report, cover to cover, for your business or perhaps a copy of "War and Peace," (in other words, something you find a bit boring and don't really feel like reading so you can understand how kids in school might feel about a three chapter reading assignment on American history), don't reach for a hardcopy.  You are behind the times if you think you will learn anything from reading something from a simple piece of paper or those things people used to call "books."

Apparently you will have a far better experience with your "content" if you will only try reading it in a digital format.  So, try it out.  Get an electronic version of a few hours worth of reading, curl up on the sofa and go for it! There will be a test in the morning so you better get started right away!

Let us know what you think!

And, by the way, you are also warned to watch your back if you carry your e-reader around with you.  We've never heard of a child being shot for the books in his backpack, have you?  Well, that will be part of the "old fashioned" way of thinking, too.  See the news video below.
