Thurmond Vows to Call in Favors to Save the Board

  1. Here is an email that I sent to the state Board of Education. I encourage everyone to send your comments to them as well. Feel free to "borrow" any or all of what I wrote. Whether you have kids in school or not, a strong school system is essential to maintain property values. Please help.

    Greetings,
I understand that our newly appointed interim Dekalb County School Superintendent, Mr. Thurmond, wildly praised the Dekalb County Board of Education for putting him in charge. He then said that he was going to do everything in his power to keep YOU from even conducting the hearing to determine if you should recommend to the Governor that they be removed. This is simply the Board's attempt to hire someone with political connections to represent them(he IS a lawyer) so that they get their case thrown out before it even comes to trial. So, our Board cuts a deal with him that if they put him in charge and give him a very nice salary(more than the previous supposedly qualified Superintendent made) he will save them from losing their positions using his political connections.

This is simply more of the same lack of management that SACS referenced in their report. Playing politics for their own personal gains vs actually fixing the problems with our school system. Our Board is doing everything possible to keep you from doing what you need to do. PLEASE don't be coerced into not doing your jobs. They(and you) know why they are doing this - you all know that the problems pointed out in the SACS report are ALL about management. And while the Superintendent had responsibilities not being fulfilled(and having her gone is a positive first step as Mr. Thurmond said) the Board has the ultimate responsibility for management of the school system of the county. Likewise, you have the same responsibility at the state level.

They know, as do you, what the right thing to do is. That's why they do not want to have you conduct your hearing. They want to attempt to subvert the process by hiring a lawyer politician to represent them and "have the case thrown out" before coming to trial. SACS would allow a newly appointed Board a sufficient amount of time to show progress so that we would at least have a chance to keep accreditation. If the Board is successful in their political maneuvering, we will surely lose accreditation. SACS is not influenced by in-state politics - that's kind of the point to having an independent accreditation agency.

DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN.Our children are the ones who are and will continue to suffer under this group. Please do your jobs - hold the hearing - recommend that the entire Board be removed - and give our school system a fighting chance.

    PLEASE.
