STONE MOUNTAIN, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
The DeKalb County School Board met on Wednesday to vote on a new chairman but for the second time, they failed to agree on who should be the leader.
No one received the five votes needed to elect a new chairman. That means current board chairman, Gene Walker, will remain in his position. He received four votes.
"If they can't even come together to vote for a chair, how can they come together and get off probation," asked David Schutten, president of the Organization of DeKalb Educators. "How can they come together and how can the public have confidence in this board?"
The squabbling Wednesday comes as the district struggles to get off probation. Its accrediting agency, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, found the board has mishandled millions of dollars and abused its power for years.

GTCO-ATL Notes:  If SACS named the chairman specifically as part of the problem and he was unable to even understand that he is supposed to represent all the children of DeKalb, then how did he manage to get four votes in favor of his continued service as chairman?

UPDATE:  We just learned that the board did elect a vice chair, Jim McMahan, from District 4 (Lakeside, Tucker).  Let's hope McMahan will bring the transparency to the process that we have all heard him say he will.  By the way, exactly when did this meeting take place??  Was the public invited??  Oh great.  Here we go again!  And, can someone please inform the board that the SACS report did not tell them to dissolve all committees... that's absurd!  It clearly stated that they were to do away with committees that have board members performing administrative functions.  That's a different "interpretation," as Dr. Walker would call it.
