Did DeKalb's Superintendent Just Tell Us to Take This Job and Shove It?

Rumors say that Dr. Atkinson is leaving DeKalb
County.  If it is true, what next?
UPDATE:  11/6/12
From DeKalb School Watch Blog:

We received this message from David Schutten, President of the DeKalb Organization of Educators:
Within the past 30 hours, I have received over two dozen texts, e-mails, and phone calls about a rumor Dr. Atkinson was leaving DeKalb for a job in Texas. This rumor is not true. This rumor began circulating six or eight weeks ago, but for some reason went into overdrive this weekend.
I asked Dr. Atkinson one month ago, and she told me she was not leaving DeKalb. She reaffirmed today she is not leaving DeKalb. I appreciate those of you who contacted me about it.

Previous Post from 11/4/12:

This message was just received from our friends and partners in our fight for a better educational system based on the good of all children, The Stephenson Community Council, led by former school board candidate Denise McGill, District 6.  Note that this is merely a report about "rumors" at this point, but it's an interesting possibility, so we felt compelled to report it here for you now.  We will update you as we learn more about the validity or error of this information.  If you have more details,  please let us know in the comments portion of this article or email us at sayno2celltowers@yahoo.com.:

Subject: NOW IS THE TIME TO TAKE ACTION (Please Post)

Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson is rumored to have resigned last evening to take a position in Texas.  It is said she departs in January 2013.

Should this be true- What an opportune time for those of us in DeKalb County to STAND UP and be heard as a collective voice for what we want in our schools.  Our voices MUST be heard!

There are serious concerns we all should have- such as:

  • Who should be Interim Superintendent?
  • Whom should be considered as a qualified individual for this position?
  • Will we succumb to allowing old Friends and Family back into power of the position?
  • Will we throw up our hands using the same old mantra “nothing will change so why do anything”

I ask you readers, how will we, the people of DeKalb county utilize our newly-elected and present Board to do what’s in the best interest of the Main Stakeholders here - THE CHILDREN, THE TEACHERS, THE COMMUNITY?

We, the residents of DeKalb County, have the power, and the means to proactively begin making our voices heard- and holding our elected representation RESPONSIBLE for making POSITIVE changes going forward.

This is the time for Us to show a UNITED force and make our voices HEARD and DEMAND the type of leadership that our county School Board needs. This, in my opinion, is the PERFECT opportunity for all parties of this county to band together and UNITE in doing what’s right for this county.

I pose the following to all what I posed while running for school board, and I need you to really ask yourselves:

Do you want “more of same”, or do you want a Board of Education and Superintendent who will advocate for all children?
Now is the time to stand up, unite, and demand a leader who’s vision is to support:

One Focus, One Voice, One DeKalb!
