Theft of Smartphones Dubbed a "National Epidemic"
Parents, please read and carefully consider if this information affects how you feel about a proposed transition to e-books in our school system (currently "on hold" as it was a decision made by the former Superintendent in 2012).
Children are smaller, weaker and more vulnerable than the adults who are being robbed of their cell phones every day! And many children have predictable schedules where they must walk home from school or the bus stop daily. Why set them up to be the next targets for a crime that is currently out of control?
U.S. officials to meet over cellphone thefts
1 in 3 thefts last year involved a cell phone costing consumers $30 billion.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Top law enforcement officials from San Francisco and New York plan to meet with some of the largest U.S. smartphone makers next week to help thwart the rise in cellphone thefts and robberies.
San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Wednesday that their meeting scheduled to take place in New York City on June 13 will be dubbed a "Smartphone Summit."
Gascon and Schneiderman said they plan to meet with representatives from Apple Inc., Google Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Microsoft Corp. and urge them to create new technology to permanently and quickly disable stolen smartphones, making them worthless to thieves.
In San Francisco, where more than half all robberies involve a cellphone, Gascon has called on the companies to create new technology such as a "kill switch" to render phones useless. His office cites a 27-year old tourist who suffered severe knife wounds to his face and throat two weeks ago after being robbed by two men over his iPhone.
In New York, Schneiderman said there was a 40% spike in cellphone thefts last year. Authorities there have coined the thefts of the popular iPhone and other Apple-related products as "Apple-picking."
"With 1.6 million Americans falling victim to smartphone theft in 2012, this has become a national epidemic," Gascón said in a statement. "Unlike other types of crimes, smartphone theft can be eradicated with a simple technological solution."
Nearly 175 million cellphones — mostly smartphones — have been sold in the U.S. in the past year and account for $69 billion in sales, according to IDC, a Massachusetts-based research firm.
And now almost one 1 of 3 robberies nationwide involves the theft of a mobile phone, reports the Federal Communications Commission, which is coordinating formation this fall of a highly anticipated national database system to track cellphones reported stolen.
Schneiderman said a recent study found that lost and stolen cellphones cost consumers over $30 billion, last year.
"The theft of handheld devices is the fastest-growing street crime, and increasingly, incidents are turning violent," Schneiderman said in a statement. "It's time for manufacturers to be as innovative in solving this problem as they have been in designing devices that have reshaped how we live."
Late last month, Gascon — in a letter to the Major Cities Chiefs Association, a coalition of police chiefs from across the country — urged them to press for kill switches.
"Despite the growing threat to public safety, cell-phone manufacturers and carriers continue to look the other way," Gascón wrote. "It's time that corporations take social responsibility and do their part to end the victimization of hundreds of thousands of Americans."
In response, the police chiefs association followed suit and sent a letter on Monday to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski. While commending the FCC and the CTIA wireless provider trade association on the national stolen phone database, they suggested that kill switch technology is "the only effective way" to go.
"By rendering phones completely useless, an FCC mandate for kill-switch technology will drastically reduce this major crime problem," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey, president of the chiefs' association wrote.

Don't "Cell" Out Our Children! Vote NO to cell towers on July 31!
Many people have asked me about the short speech I gave at the DeKalb Board of Education meeting in November of 2011 during the public comments portion of the meeting. So, I'm reprinting it here as a reminder to everyone that the school board elections are right around the corner.
If you do not know whether or not a candidate or incumbant would vote in favor or against a cell tower at your child's school or next to your home, I suggest you find out before deciding whether or not that person should be able to represent you.

Unfortunately, efforts made to ban the towers completely left us with a "non-binding advisory referendum" on the upcoming ballot. While they call it an "advisory" referendum, you know that means it will likely be used to determine which areas of DeKalb will be the best places for them to try putting up the next round of towers once the first 8 go up. (Smoke Rise, Briarlake, ML King High, Princeton, Narvie J. Harris, Margaret Harris, Jolly, Flat Rock.)
There will be a question on the July 31 ballot about this issue. It will ask you if the DeKalb School system should "place or operate telecommunications towers" at any public or charter school. WE hope you will agree that putting children at risk from a health and safety standpoint should never be an option, no atter how deserate the county is for money. You are urged to vote NO!
Please vote NO to "telecommunications towers" at any public school and warn others aabout the importance of showing up to vote July 31, or your school or neighborhood might be next!

COMMENT MADE DURING NOVEMBER 2011 BOE PUBLIC MEETING:
I would be cordial and greet you here tonight, but I know you guys don’t want to hear from me, but here it goes again. It makes me sick that I even have to come up here and talk about cell towers. As a father, it makes me sick to tell my daughter that her life would be at risk, whether you guys believe it or not.
You guys seem to think that it doesn’t show any risk factors. But, I’m also a physical therapist and I work in a bone marrow unit and I work with leukemia patients every day. Come in to my work if you don’t think something like this exists. Picture one of your loved ones sitting in that bed. They can’t do anything, frail and weak. They didn’t ask for it. But, for some reason you guys think it is okay to expose children to this? I don’t get it.
I was also a boxer. I have been in hundreds of fights. And every time I think of what you guys have done, it feels like someone sucker punched me from behind. And. I feel that way every day I have to think about this.
I got in my truck the day we found out. I got in my truck and went to my neighbors with pen and paper and got signatures. I said, “Did anybody tell you that this was going on?” Not a single person knew. Not a single one. And we came and we told you guys that and you said, “Oh we haven’t seen any factors that we would think it would be dangerous.
B.S. There is a dirty little secret and we are going to uncover it. You are not going to get away with it. I promise you that. Again, it makes me sick that I even have to bring this up. The fact that we’ve been lied to by our principal. Let’s just talk about notification. Our principal said, “We didn’t know anything. We were just told to put the information in the children’s backpacks…. in my three year old’s backpack, isn’t that pleasant? That’s a sweet thing in pre-K.
SO…. We go to the principal and she says, “We didn’t know.” So we go to the PTA and they say “We didn’t know.” And at first they are all up and arms about it and then they say, “We can’t take a stand on issues like this.” So we are left in the dark. So, we have to continue to seek the answers.
Not a single person has told me, not a single person, a positive that is coming out of this. Except, “Oh, the schools are going get money.” $25,000 hush money for the PTA? That’s not acceptable. The cost of somebody’s bone marrow transplant doesn’t cover the cost of a single payment that we will ever get. I don’t get it.
And, God forbid… (pause)… I don’t ever want to wish any illness on anybody, but again, come in to my work, step one foot in the bone marrow transplant unit and I guarantee you will rip those cell towers out of there.
(to the board) Bad people... It’s not nice.

Congress Asked to Investigate Marketing of Mobile Phones to Children
Children's Advocates Ask Congress to
Investigate the Marketing of
Mobile Phones to Kids
In 2005, privacy, consumer and childrens advocates sent letters today to key Members of Congress, asking them to investigate the marketing and sale of mobile phones to children, and their effects on children’s privacy, education, safety and health. The letters were written and organized by Commercial Alert, and sent to all members of the commerce committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. The letter follows.

We, as parents, teachers, guardians and responsible adults need to stand firm in our efforts to protect the children and not allow ourselves to fall victim to the persuasive messages that are everywhere in our own environment. We need to remain alert to the messages the children are seeing and help them understand the difference between perception and reality.
July 16, 2005
Dear Members of Congress:
On July 6th, the Walt Disney Internet Group and Sprint announced their intention to offer wireless telephone service to children 8-12 years of age.
This was just the latest in what is emerging as an industry trend. Earlier this year, Firefly Mobile enlisted 100,000 children for their mobile phone service. Enfora has announced plans to offer mobile phone service targeting children as young as six years of age. This fall, Wherify is planning to offer a “Wherifone” for children with built-in Global Positioning System (GPS) location tracking. In August, Mattel is expected to market Barbie-branded mobile phones. Hasbro is preparing its own mobile phone for children, too, called “Chat Now.”
The targeting of young children as the next growth market for the telecom industry is one of the worst ideas to appear in the American economy in a long time. Does anyone really believe that kids today lack sufficient distractions from their school work, that there are insufficient disruptions in the home, and that child predators and advertisers lack sufficient means of access to kids?
If the Disney Corporation and the others just wanted to give children a way to contact parents in emergencies, that would be one thing. The telecommunications companies—to parents at least—are playing up this angle. Telecommunications lobbyists in Washington will harp on it as well.
But despite the industrys rhetoric, Disney and the telecommunications companies really want to use children as conduits to their parents’ wallets. And marketers want another way to bypass parents and speak directly to the nations children.
Already, marketers are leaping to send advertisements via mobile phones. For example, Advertising Age reported on July 11th that many corporations, including McDonalds, Coca-Cola and Timex, are moving “from small [mobile phone advertising] tests to all-out campaign[s].” Children already are bombarded with too much advertising. They don’t need more advertising through their mobile phones, whether it is telemarketing, text message marketing, adver-games, or any other type of commercial messages.
Before the telecommunications industry declares “open season” upon the children of this country, we urge you to investigate and make absolutely certain that the industry has answers to the following questions.
Child Predators. Will adults other than parents be able to contact children through these phones, without the permission of parents? What about sexual predators, convicted criminals, etc.?
Disclosure of Children’s Whereabouts. For mobile phones to work, telecommunications companies must know where their customersҒ phones are. Will anyone other than the childs parents, law enforcement officials and telecommunications companies be able to track the physical location of the child’s mobile phone?
Interruptions in School and Church. Will the mobile phones cause disruptions and distractions in church and school, or will they be designed not to function in such locations? The potential for disruption here affects not just the individual child, but every child in the group in question.
Runaway Billing. Will parents have absolute control over billing and charges, so that no charges can be incurred without the parents specific prior consent? This includes charges for regular and special services, 888 numbers, and the rest.
Children’s Health. Children are vulnerable in ways that adults are not, physically as well as emotionally. In January, the British National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) issued a report, titled “Mobile Phones and Health,” which warned about the possibility that mobile phones could cause benign tumors of the ear and brain. The NRPB recommended that parents not give mobile phones to children under eight years of age, that older children should limit their use of mobile phones, and that “the mobile phone industry should refrain from promoting the use of mobile phones by children.”
Upon release of the report, NRPB Chairman Sir William Stewart said, “I don’t think we can put our hands on our hearts and say mobile phones are safe.”
He also said that “If there are risks, and we think there may be risks, then the people who are going to be most affected are children, and the younger the child, the greater the danger.”
How has the U.S. mobile phone industry factored this warning into its service plans? Can it guarantee that children will suffer no adverse health effects from the use of mobile phones? If not, then why is it offering mobile phones to children? Is the industry willing to take full responsibility for the effects of its phones upon childrens' health?
The move to put mobile phones into the hands of children as young as six years old is not a decision to take lightly. It opens up a plethora of problems, not just for the children with the phones but for schools, churches, families and classmates as well.
Now is the time to pause, investigate and consider. Once the phones are in classrooms, playrooms, and in children’s bedrooms, it will be too late. Already we read with grim regularity of children molested by predators who contacted them over the Internet. We read of children who cannot focus their own attention even for short times. We hope we will not now read about children abducted by adults who seduced them through mobile phones, and of school rooms that cannot function because of mobile phones that ring constantly, just because Congress did not stand up and act.

11Alive: The Great Hang Up!
Have you joined the Great Hang Up? Check out the dedicated page on 11 Alive's website for more information on the current laws and the many reasons why everyone needs to stop texting and driving in the ATL!
We're dedicated to informing the people of Metro Atlanta of the dangers of distracted driving and we are inviting you to join the movement to put down the phone while driving. It's the Great Hang Up!
Just click and print out 11Alive's Great Hang Up Pledge. You can sign it and keep it in your car as a reminder.
We encourage teenagers, schools, moms, dads, and businesses all throughout Metro Atlanta to join the movement and be part of the Great Hang Up!
Did you know that the summer months are when most teen accidents occur? 56% of teens say they are on phone calls while driving and car accidents are the #1 cause of death among teens. Help us encourage teens and everyone to "X the TXT"!
Click here to see one family's tragic story about texting and driving.
GTCO-ATL supports anti-texting while driving laws as fewer mobile calls and texts mean fewer consumers using cell phones which means fewer cell towers needed overall. In fact, we could probably even have a lot of our existing cell towers taken down if we significantly reduced the amount of time we spend talking, texting or sending/receiving data when travelling. Besides, we should be keeping our eyes on the road anyway!
Human life is far too precious to be taken for granted - let's not waste it over something as simple as waiting to get to a land line to make a call.

Would You Give Your Right Hand for Your IPAD? Literally?
EXERPT FROM CHANGE.ORG:
According to the New York Times, workers at a factory in Shenzhen, China, owned by Foxconn (a company that manufactures iPhones, iPads and other devices for Apple) regularly work sixteen-hour, seven-day work weeks.
They stand until their legs swell and they can’t walk, and they perform repetitive motions on the production line for so long that some permanently lose the use of their hands. To cut costs, managers make workers use cheap chemicals that cause neurological damage. There has been a rash of suicides at the Foxconn plant, and 300 workers recently threatened to jump off the roof over a safety and pay dispute.
In short, as one former Apple executive told the New York Times, "Most people would be really disturbed if they saw where their iPhone comes from."

New Year's Resolutions from The Center for Safer Wireless
(click headline for the full story)
Here are some great tips we wanted to pass along from The Center for Safer Wireless. To visit their website directly, go to: http://www.centerforsaferwireless.org/. You will find a great deal of helpful information for ways to help your family reduce the overall amount of radiation you are exposed ot on a regular basis which will improve your health and help reduce your cancer risk.
Rather than allowing your new e-reader to radiate your lap the
entire time you are reading a book, simply go into the Settings
and turn off the pulsed wi-fi signal until you need to access the
Internet to download something new. If you need to be online
for any length of time, its better to keep the device away from
your body by using a pillow or lap desk, which can be found at
any office supply store and even at toy stores for around $10.
|
Some Suggested Resolutions for 2012
If you have Wi-Fi, consider returning to cabled Internet access which greatly diminishes your exposure to pulsed radiofrequency radiation and lessens your chances of being hacked.
Replace your cordless phone with a wired phone
Reach for a wired phone (when available) instead of a cell phone to make a call.
Opt for a low-frequency baby monitor (40 MHz).
Wireless Product Safety Tip E-Readers
Wired devices are the safest way to go. For those who gave or received e-readers as Christmas gifts (Nook, Kindle, tablets, iPads, Kobo) you can reduce your exposure to pulsed radiofrequency radiation by simply turning off the wireless signal on these devices. When you are reading an e-book, newspaper, or magazine, you don't need a wireless connection with the e-reader. To disable the wireless signal, each device is different. Search for phrases such as "turn off wireless signal" or "disable wireless network connection." Use the wireless connection only when accessing the Internet (such as when downloading a book or an application) and turn off the wireless signal when you are finished with the activity. Also, with the wireless disabled, you won't have to re-charge your e-reader as often.
To reduce health risks, we recommend that parents impose rules for children using an e-reader. In addition to the above recommendations, children shouldn't lay the e-reader on their bodies. Instead, they can place the devices on pillows in their laps or on desks and tables. Not only is the pulsed radiofrequency radiation a concern but also the alternating current magnetic fields from the devices. Keeping a distance between young bodies and the devices helps to reduce health risks.
Adults can follow these rules for e-readers and when using a wireless laptop.
Keep these tips in mind if your child is issued a wireless device in school such as an I-pad or Tablet.

iPhone 4 Explodes Midflight on Australian Airline
By Lauren Effron | ABC News (Reprinted)

While on Australian flight Regional Express ZL319 Friday, a passenger’s iPhone 4 (not the iPhone 4S, which is Apple’s latest model) suddenly started “emitting a significant amount of dense smoke, accompanied by a red glow,” according to a Regional Express statement.
The plane, which was flying from Lismore to Sydney, was in the midst of landing when the incident occured. “In accordance with company standard safety procedures, the flight attendant carried out recovery actions immediately, and the red glow was extinguished successfully,” according to Regional Express’ statement.
After landing, the iPhone was handed over to officials at the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. There’s no official word yet on what caused the phone to combust.
Exploding Apple products are rare, but explosions have happened in the past, mostly related to the devices’ lithium ion batteries overheating.
The European Union launched an investigation in 2009 after multiple instances of iPhones and iPod Touches exploding or catching fire midflight were reported in the U.K., Holland, France and Sweden.
Apple also recalled its first-generation of iPod nanos sold between September 2005 and December 2006 because the battery would overheat and “pose a safety risk,” according to the company’s website.

Example for How to Fight Back
Portland Oregon learned about cell towers coming to their neighborhood just a few weeks ago, unlike the several months that we have had here in DeKalb County. Here's how they are handling it as mentioned on their community website:
Note to DeKalb County Schools, if your school was not on the list this time, you might be caught off guard when you receive the news. We hope you are reading and learning from the events that have happened so that you will be better prepared than our first groups of schools were. Once a precedent is set, there will be nothing to stop the Board of Education from coming back to this "cash cow" again and again.
If you have a child at a cell tower school, or live in a neighborhood nearby, it is not too late! But, DO NOT attempt to negotiate with the Board of Education OR the county commissioners office as they have already been contacted repeatedly. They are either not able to change the decision, or do not want to do so.
This is now a matter that requires legal representation. You must act quickly before the towers are built for your best chance at a victory and for recooperating your attorney fees.
Good Luck! Email us at sayno2celltowers@yahoo.com if we can help.
Eastmoreland Neighborhood Association Meeting Thursday 11/17/11
Eastmoreland Neighborhood Association members vote whether or not to allocate funds to provide much needed legal support. We suspect this issue will not be without some degree of controversy among ENA members. We need as many neighbors and friends to voice their concerns and show their support for this issue. Please remember we’re in this together (as a community) and more towers will likely follow without our support. Similar legal issues (based on preserving neighborhood character) have been fought and won in Oregon. Please join us at the Eastmoreland Neighborhood Association meeting this Thursday – 11/17 – 7:00pm in the Duniway School library.Note to DeKalb County Schools, if your school was not on the list this time, you might be caught off guard when you receive the news. We hope you are reading and learning from the events that have happened so that you will be better prepared than our first groups of schools were.
